The Deeper Meaning of Merlin Archetype in Astrology - Asteroid 2598

This month, asteroid Merlin is conjunct Pluto, conjunct my natal Midheaven and I must admit, this archetype has been capturing my attention in a profound way. So much so that I ended up sharing a long video on this alignment.

I have encountered Merlin repeatedly through the regression hypnosis sessions with my clients when Merlin appeared as one of their guides. I have sensed Merlin's guidance in my own moments of inner alchemy over the years. And since I know of the Asteroid Merlin (2598) I was eager to see his placement in the charts of fascinating individuals.

The symbolism of Merlin feels remarkably relevant to the times we are living in. As I reflected on the mythology and explored the stories associated with Merlin, I found myself realizing that there is far more to this archetype than the popular image of an old wizard waving a wand and performing magic tricks.

Like many myths, the story appears to contain layer upon layer of symbolic meaning. The deeper I looked, the more Merlin began to reveal himself not only as a magician, but as a guide, an alchemist, a keeper of wisdom, a storyteller, a bridge between worlds, and perhaps most importantly, a custodian of the hidden laws that govern life itself.

Pluto has a way of drawing our attention beneath the surface. It exposes what is hidden, challenges what has become stagnant, and innitiates transformation at the deepest level. When Pluto aligns with an asteroid, I often become curious about what aspect of consciousness is being amplified through that archetype. With Merlin, I cannot help but feel that we are collectively being invited to recognize our innate ability to alchemize what needs to be transformed and to better understand the power of universal laws. We may also be called to reconsider our relationship with truth, knowledge, influence, and the responsibility that comes with seeing beyond the obvious. In tropical Astrology, this conjunction occurs in the early degrees of Aquarius and aligns with Altair, the brightest star of the Aquila constellation. To me, this invites us to cultivate an eagle-eye perspective on the collective transformation unfolding around us, detached from the need for worldly events to be a certain way and anchored instead in faith that evolutionary forces and universal laws are at work.

One of the things that fascinates me most about Merlin is that there is no single version of him. Depending on the source, he appears as a prophet, a bard, an adviser, an astrologer, a healer, an alchemist, a seer, a strategist, a mystic and a guide. Rather than seeing this as contradiction, I see it as a clue. The Merlin archetype may not be about one specific role at all. It may represent a state of consciousness that can express itself through many different forms.

As I explored the mythology, the aspect that resonated most strongly with me was Merlin's connection with alchemy. Not the Hollywood version of magic, but the ancient pursuit of understanding the invisible principles operating beneath visible reality. Many of the older stories describe Merlin as someone deeply connected with nature, astronomy, astrology, mathematics, healing and the observation of patterns. He appears less interested in controlling reality and more interested in understanding how reality functions.

This immediately reminded me of why I fell in love with Astrology in the first place.

At its highest expression, Astrology is not about prediction. It is about pattern recognition. It is about observing relationships between seemingly separate things and discovering the deeper intelligence that connects them. The more years I spend studying charts, mythology, consciousness and human experience, the more I find myself standing in awe of the Spirit that breathes the extraordinary complexity and orderly beauty of the cosmic design into being.

Perhaps this is one of Merlin's greatest gifts. He reminds us that wisdom begins with curiosity. The desire to understand. The willingness to observe. The humility to recognize that there is always more to discover.

The old alchemical teaching of turning lead into gold feels especially relevant here. While historians continue to debate the literal goals of alchemy, its symbolic value remains timeless. Every one of us encounters periods of challenge, pain, confusion, loss, disappointment and uncertainty. The Merlin archetype suggests that these experiences are not merely obstacles to overcome. They are raw materials for transformation. Through awareness, reflection and conscious participation, what initially appears heavy and limiting can gradually become a gift of wisdom, compassion, maturity and strength.

This process feels particularly relevant during this Pluto transit. Pluto rarely asks us to remain who we were. Instead, it invites us to release identities, beliefs and structures that no longer support our growth. It asks us to discover who we are a the core (atomic) level, beneath the masks, beneath the conditioning and beneath the stories we have inherited about ourselves.

Another aspect of the mythology that continues to intrigue me is Merlin's relationship with King Arthur. Merlin was not the king. He did not sit upon the throne. Instead, he served as guide, adviser and mentor. He recognized potential in Arthur long before Arthur fully recognized it within himself.

I often notice this theme in people who carry strong Merlin signatures in their charts. Many feel naturally drawn toward teaching, mentoring, guiding, counselling, healing or helping others navigate periods of transformation. They may not always seek recognition or authority, yet they possess an unusual ability to help others see themselves more clearly. They often recognize gifts, strengths and possibilities in people long before those individuals can see them for themselves.

In this sense, Merlin represents a very different form of power. Not power through control. Not power through domination. But power through wisdom, insight and service.

One detail from the mythology surprised me more than any other. Merlin is often associated with the archetype of the bard. This immediately caught my attention because bards were not simply entertainers. They were storytellers, historians and keepers of collective memory. Through stories, songs and spoken word, they preserved wisdom across generations. 

The more I reflected on this, the more significant it felt and this part may feel in particular importnat for those of you with asteroid Merlin in Gemini in your natal chart. Stories shape reality. Words influence perception. The narratives we tell ourselves can either imprison us or liberate us. They can perpetuate fear or inspire possibility. They can reinforce limitation or invite transformation.

Perhaps this is another reason why the Merlin archetype feels so relevant today. We live in a world overflowing with information, opinions, predictions and competing narratives. Never before have human beings had access to so much information, yet many people feel more confused than ever. Merlin reminds us that wisdom is not measured by how much information we accumulate. Wisdom is measured by our ability to discern what is true, meaningful and useful.

The mythology also portrays Merlin as a bridge between worlds. Some stories describe him as existing between the human world and the otherworld, moving freely between visible and invisible realms. Whether we interpret this literally or symbolically, the image is powerful. Many people who resonate with Merlin describe feeling as though they live between worlds themselves. They may be practical and grounded while simultaneously fascinated by spirituality, symbolism, intuition, dreams, mythology or consciousness. They may feel called to bring deeper truths into practical application. Rather than escaping reality, they seek to understand it more fully.

This bridge-building quality may be one of Merlin's most important contributions. At a time when society feels increasingly polarized, fragmented and divided, perhaps we need more people willing to connect worlds rather than separate them. People willing to build bridges between science and spirituality, logic and intuition, ancient wisdom and modern understanding, individuality and community.

Of course, every archetype contains a shadow. Merlin is no exception. Wisdom can become arrogance. Knowledge can become manipulation. Insight can become superiority. The desire to guide can become the desire to control. The mythology itself hints at these dangers, reminding us that understanding must always be balanced with humility.

This is where Pluto's involvement becomes particularly interesting. Pluto exposes shadow wherever it exists. It invites us to examine not only how we use power, but why we use it. It asks us to become conscious of our motivations and align our gifts with integrity.

One of the most fascinating examples I have encountered recently is Matías De Stefano, whose South Node on Midheaven is conjunct asteroid Merlin in early Libra and the Super Galactic Center. Interestingly, Merlin is also the subject of his only tattoo. And Sir Robert Edward Grant with his Ascendant conjunct Merlin and star Arcturus. Both gentlemen are clearly expressing Merlin archetype in many profound ways. I find examples like this endlessly fascinating. Again and again, I observe people unconsciously embodying archetypes that are strongly emphasized within their birth charts long before they become consciously aware of the symbolism.

This is one of the reasons I never tire of studying Astrology. What begins as mythology often reveals itself as psychology. What begins as symbolism often reveals itself as lived experience. What begins as curiosity often unfolds into recognition.

And perhaps that is the deeper invitation of Merlin. Not to become a magician, but to become a student and a custodian of wisdom. To observe more carefully. To think more deeply. To communicate more consciously. To transform experience into understanding. To use knowledge in service of the great spirit/god/source rather than ego.

In a world overflowing with noise, perhaps the true magic of Merlin was never magic at all. Perhaps it was wisdom. And perhaps that is exactly what Pluto is inviting us to reclaim. Understanding of deepest truth, laws and aligning fully with them.
